From May 25 to June 17, 1944 Nazis performed large-scale punitive operation "Cormorant" against guerrillas and civilians in the territory of Belarus. Invaders expected fast approach of the Red Army therefore took under control extensive territories to the north from Minsk and started systematic destruction of settlements. According to experts, the Wehrmacht pursued two aims: to suppress the underground movement and to capture as much as possible captives who could work for the benefit of the German industry. Large forces of Wehrmacht, army of CC and police were involved in operation. Nazis managed to surround groups of guerrillas and to actually liquidate the Borisovsko-Begomlsky zone of resistance.
